Practice profile

IPT Architects is an award-winning RIBA Chartered practice that was founded in 2003 by Amira Idris and Lee Town, and its energetic studio is located in central London. Both partners have worked on projects throughout the UK and Continental Europe, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Montenegro.

IPTA works at all scales from product design to residential, education, commercial and public projects, and has a diverse portfolio of completed work. The practice has private, commercial and public sector clients and has wide experience of working on projects in diverse locations, from tight urban spaces to controversial rural sites. They are experienced in maximising development opportunities and in negotiating planning consents on sensitive sites.

Our open plan studio provides the infrastructure for creative and energetic thinking. Our projects are informed by a rigorous research into materials, construction techniques, sustainability and a sensitive approach to place. Having a workshop in-house allows us to test and experiment with diverse materials and modern method of construction by creating mock-ups of building fragments. This way we maintain absolute control over the entire process and ensure that the integrity of our design and its execution is always met.

IPTA is recognized for its work in architecture that has been internationally published .The practice has won a number of awards for its projects, including RIBA Awards and an Award for Innovation in Interactive Public Space, UK. IPT Architects was also finalist of the Young Architects of the Year in 2011.

Practice approach

We are very interested in the multilayered and often complex journey of architecture, and how contemporary society influences our approach to practice and making places. We believe in the value of powerful ideas that are embedded in the built form regardless of its scale. Our design emerges from close examination of the site’s qualities and its context whilst creating a contemporary and sustainable building embodying high quality design and craftsmanship. Our aim is always to deliver projects on budget and on time without compromising on the quality of the design by ensuring a methodical dialogue with our clients, stakeholders and collaborators. We focus on creating architectural solutions that not only respond sensitively to the site and the environment, but also are innovative, practical and delightful. Ultimately, every building we create is designed to make people’s life better.

We continually explore the boundaries of the profession of architecture within the broader context, which has motivated us to work beyond the traditional practice model by collaborating with other creative and commercial industries. This has allowed us to be proactively engaged and involved architecturally in the complete process of creating and making buildings. We have been inspired to think laterally, which continues to enrich our experiences within a multifaceted practice.
